Hello:
I am brand new here and new to the world of inline skating although I used to be a huge roller skater when I was younger.  I am 37, out of shape and overweight with bad knees so i thought that maybe inline skating is my ticket.  Inevitably I would love to play roller hockey as long as I could get in to good enough shape.  Do you recommend skating as a way for me to get in to shape and to get rid of my big belly?

I hope my questions aren't too stupid.

Thanks,

Joe

Tis as good a way as any bru, and probably better than most but definitely waaaay more fun than all the rest (in my opinion anyway). Seriously tho, rollin is clinically proven to be much better over all for you than say running (less impact and more cardio). A good balanced diet and an hour or two of rollin every day n you'll be fit as a fiddle in no time. I'd recommend start off just basic skatin, pick a location and go there by the flatest route possible, then as you get better you can get into jumping n stuff and can find alternative routes depending on your mood. I skate street all the time, much more fun than park in my opinion cus you can just go for days without exhausting your options.
And for the record, I was 30 gettin back on my skates, I've osteo-arthritis in both knees n I'll tell ya - you wouldn't think so but rollin actually helps.....Not half as stiff n sore as I was before I started back. So no you're never too old to roll!! =)
Stiff and sore is my life unfortunately. I'd like to down the line play some roller hockey somewhere down the line which i have always wanted to do but i will take it slow. Which skates do you recommend I buy? i was going to go to Modell's tonight to buy a pair. Thank you so much for your reply.

Um, skates....well personally I skate xsjados; they're beautiful, lightweight, comfy and a great fit......unfortunately they're totally unsuitable for hockey. When I started up again last year, I bought a pair off Ebay, they were big, solid, chunky, heavy tanks but they were cheap and allowed me to decide if I was gonna stick with it before I spent large amounts on a good set. I'd say have a chat with the shop and see what they recommend.....no harm in goin for lowend skates to begin I think. If your happy to spend, then try either Remz or Razors.....to be honest I'm prob not the best person to be askin as my experience is limited but thats my 2cents for what its worth man. =)

Oh yeah....and I cant stress this enough.....Safety gear...this is sooo important, especially for the older lads like ourselves...seems once ya turn 30 ya dont heal as fast anymore. My first night out rollin last year was jan 2nd, I had no pads or guards. One bad fall later (fair enuff I was tryin a 360 for the first time in 12 years) I tore all the ligaments and tendons in my left wrist, spent next 6 months strapped up from the elbow to the knuckles. Over a year later....still havin problems occasionally. It sucks but I just dont bounce like I used to. =) So fuck what anyone says, unless you're sure of yourself pads are a good idea. Personally I only use wrist guards cus I land on my hands no matter how I fall, but some day I'll kneecap myself off the ground and then I'll wish I had em on. Til then I recommend wrist guards as standard - even the pros will wear em.
i have belly:) haha
Anything involved with cardio is good. But yeah,. Words to the wise put some pads on it. We don't heal nearly as good as we used to. I bust a *ut and my pride shot when trying to 540 mute grab over on a roof gap and eating concrete. I'm trying to stay-tru til the day I'm sleeping in a plywood box. Stay-up..Stay-up..Peace
yes its a very good idea i would 100% reccomend aggressive inline to lose weight and it will build you up(stomach and legs mainly) i doubt it will make you muscleyif thats what your after but it will get you into shape gauranteed...go to your local skate park and try a few lil tricks n if you like it keep at it you will defanantly lose all your fat...age is just a number and if people say anything dont take notice of them...try it...peace
