I usually start by tryin to jump OVER the rail and just nick it as i come over to get my jump just right, then once u think you have the right jump just go for it. If its any kinda soul lock trick you wanna be right ontop of the rail!

http://www.vimeo.com/1885813 <-- End of this vid I did my first big down rail and it only took 3 tries to get the shot in the video, once you get the jump just got for it!

and brent, that handrail was sweet dude, the one which im looking at isnt down stairs. just flat so theres no slope. which is pretty annoying

Remember, you don't have to jump onto the highest point of the rail. Notice where other skaters are landing on the rail. They're a good foot or so down the rail before they lock on. Also, another thing, which many people have trouble with...you NEED to be right on top of the rail. This is where commitment comes in. You can't be on one side or the other, but you need to be right over it for the best balance. It can be a hard thing to work on because it's a bit scary when learning mainly because, if you do fall, you might fall hard.

I totaly agree with GenuineRolla skating is mostly mental fear causes your body to lock up. Try jumping out to the rail instead of up to it. Ya its scarry at first but learning how to fall or should I say not fall is just as important, if your feet dont lock dont just fall grab the rail. And if you fall on a certain rail dont leave, make sure you grind it at least one more time so you wont be scared of that particular rail.Keep rollen.
